Paragliding safety - what really reduces risk

Paragliding is an air sport with real but manageable risks. The important question is not whether risk exists, but which risks matter most and how a pilot can reduce them before, during and after every flight.

Paragliding safety depends on two layers: the passive safety of the wing and the active safety of the pilot. Most serious situations do not start with equipment failure. They start with weather misjudgment, unsuitable wing choice, lack of recent practice or overconfidence.

What accident data really shows

Accident reports consistently show that launch, landing, weather decisions and overconfidence matter more than pure equipment failure.

Statistics do not replace training, but they highlight where pilots can reduce risk: conservative weather choices, suitable wing class, regular practice and maintained rescue equipment.

  • Many serious situations start with a wrong decision before take-off.
  • Launch and landing remain critical because there is little height for correction.
  • An EN-A wing does not make bad weather or poor planning safe.

Passive and active safety

Passive safety describes how stable and self-recovering a wing is after disturbances. Active safety describes what the pilot does: reading weather, feeling the wing, active flying and landing early.

Both layers are needed. A forgiving wing does not replace weather discipline. An experienced pilot should still not ignore old material, wrong sizing or poor trim.

  • Passive safety: EN class, wing geometry, correct all-up weight and material condition.
  • Active safety: training, weather awareness, ground handling, recent flying and personal limits.
  • Material changes over time: porosity, line length and trim affect flight behaviour.

What EN classes mean

EN-A, EN-B, EN-C and EN-D are test classifications. They describe how a wing reacts to defined disturbances under controlled test conditions. Real mountains, valley winds, lee turbulence and strong thermals are not a laboratory.

Weather is the largest lever

Many accidents do not happen in obviously extreme weather. They happen in conditions that looked acceptable. Thermals, valley wind, lee and local gusts need to be judged before launch.

  • Do not launch by the clock. Launch only when the actual conditions fit your level.
  • Weather apps are model data, not a guarantee at launch.
  • Staying on the ground when unsure is not missed flying. It is good risk management.

SIV training and reserve parachutes

SIV means simulation of in-flight incidents. Over water, under instructor supervision, pilots learn how their own wing reacts to collapses, stalls and dynamic manoeuvres.

Every pilot needs a reserve parachute. The key points are correct size, correct integration into the harness and regular repacking. The deployment handle must be easy to find without looking.

2-year check and reserve repack

A paraglider ages even when it looks fine. Fabric porosity, line lengths, trim and seams need regular inspection. Through Paramaniac and partner workshops you can drop wings and reserves off at the Taufkirchen showroom near Munich.

What is the difference between EN-A and EN-B?

Nylon compresses in the container, moisture can make fabric layers stick together and opening time can increase. During repacking, cloth, lines and deployment system are inspected.
