Frequently asked questions about paragliding & paramotors
Everything you should know before buying - from training to equipment.
Basics
What is a paraglider?
A paraglider is a steerable non-powered aircraft for soaring and thermal flying. The pilot launches on foot from a slope or mountain, is carried by the wing and can stay airborne for hours in thermal lift. Paragliders are the lightest form of aviation and complete systems weigh only 1 to 6 kg.
What is a paramotor?
A paramotor combines a paraglider wing with a backpack engine and propeller. The engine makes it possible to launch from flat ground without a mountain or winch. Powered paragliding offers a high level of freedom: depending on local rules you can launch from suitable airfields or approved areas, fly independently of thermals and enjoy cross-country flights in calm air. A complete motor system usually weighs between 16 kg and 25 kg.
What is the difference between paragliding and powered paragliding?
The main difference is propulsion. Free-flight paragliding uses thermals and ridge lift, while a paramotor carries its own engine. Paragliding pilots need mountains, hills or a winch launch; paramotor pilots launch with engine thrust from suitable fields or airfields. Training and licences differ as well. Both sports can be practiced safely when training, weather decisions and equipment choices are taken seriously.
Training & licence
Do I need a licence for paragliding or powered paragliding?
Yes, in Germany and most European countries you need a valid pilot licence. For paragliding you need the relevant free-flight licence, and for powered paragliding you need a powered-paraglider licence. Without the required licence you may not fly independently. Training is completed at certified flight schools.
How long does paragliding or paramotor training take?
Paragliding training usually takes 1 to 6 months depending on weather and available time. Plan for at least 30 to 40 flights. Paramotor training can often be shorter when offered as an intensive course because you do not need mountain launch conditions. Both routes include theory and practical training.
How much does training cost?
Paragliding training in Europe often costs around EUR1,500 to EUR2,500 including rental equipment and theory lessons. Paramotor training is commonly in a similar range, with fuel and motor-specific training added. Many pilots buy their own equipment after training, when size, wing class and personal setup requirements are clear.
At what age can you start paragliding or powered paragliding?
Age limits depend on the country and licence system. In Germany, paragliding training can start before the final licence age, while the licence itself requires the official minimum age. Powered paragliding also has its own minimum age. For minors, parental consent is required. There is no fixed upper age limit as long as fitness and medical requirements are met.
Costs & buying advice
How much does a complete paragliding setup cost?
A new complete paragliding setup with wing, harness, reserve and helmet usually costs around EUR4,500 to EUR7,000. The wing is normally the largest part of the budget, followed by harness, reserve and helmet. Used equipment can be cheaper, but condition, service history and correct sizing matter. We help you choose a setup that matches your level, weight range and budget.
How much does a complete paramotor setup cost?
A complete paramotor setup with engine, wing, reserve and helmet usually costs around EUR9,000 to EUR15,000. The engine is the most expensive component, while the wing, reserve and helmet complete the system. Lightweight engines such as Vittorazi Atom 80 and powerful all-rounders such as Vittorazi Moster 185 are common choices depending on pilot weight and flying style.
Which paraglider is suitable for beginners?
Beginners should choose a forgiving EN-A certified wing. These wings are designed for training and early flying experience, with calm handling and strong passive safety. The correct size for your take-off weight is just as important as the model. Get advice before buying, because an unsuitable wing can slow learning and reduce confidence.
Which engine is best for paramotor beginners?
For beginners we usually look for low weight, reliability, simple maintenance, easy starting and enough thrust for the pilot's body weight. Vittorazi Atom 80, Vittorazi Moster 185 and lightweight Air Conception systems can all be good options depending on pilot weight, foot-launch or trike use and flying goals.
Where can I buy paragliding and paramotor equipment?
You can buy equipment from specialist dealers such as Paramaniac. We are an official dealer for more than 20 brands and provide personal advice from active pilots. Buying from a specialist gives you original products, warranty support, spare-parts access and real setup advice instead of anonymous box-shipping.
